The Sideling Hill Exhibit Center has
been in continuous operation since August 1991. The center is jointly
staffed and managed by the Maryland State Highway Administration, Maryland
Office of Tourism Development, and the Maryland State Forest and Park
Service as a Geological Exhibit Center, Tourist Attraction, and Road Side
Rest Area.
The center offers a unique glimpse
at a geological wonder called a Syncline. The Syncline was exposed as over
10 million tons of sedimentary rock was removed to facilitate the
construction of Interstate 68 in the late 1980’s. This geological
formation is accessible by walkways and is complimented by a four level
Geological Exhibit inside of the center. This exhibit explores the
exposure of sedimentary rocks, minerals, and fossils present at the road
cut. Many of the exhibits are interactive and provide a unique perspective
to our pre history. Geology exhibit group tours are available by calling
(301) 842-2155 to make your reservation.
The center also displays several
wild animal mounts of species typical to Western Maryland.
The visiting public is encouraged to
drive to the Sideling Hill Center, bring a picnic lunch (tables
available), examine the wildlife mounts, and tour the interpretive
exhibits and road cut.
Modern restroom facilities and snack
machines are available. Additionally, the center accommodates
mobility-impaired individuals and has interpretive displays for the blind.
The Sideling Hill Exhibit Center is
located on west of Hancock, Maryland on Interstate 68 at the boundary of
Allegany and Washington Counties. For further information please contact
the center at (301) 678-5442.
