Experience the
Beauty of
Seneca Caverns- West Virginia's Largest
Hidden beneath the Earth's
surface only a few miles from the highest point in West Virginia, lie the
beautiful Seneca Caverns. Located 3 miles southeast of Riverton, WV off
Rt. 33 and 28 and only 6 miles from Seneca Rocks, the subterranean
passages have attracted visitors young and old alike. Spectacular natural
formations and huge chambers were discovered in 1760, although commercial
tours of the caverns didn’t begin until 1930
As you walk the
three-quarter mile passage through this underground world, you’ll hear
water dripping intermittently and streams flowing which indicate that
sections of the caverns are alive and growing. On your guided tour you
will discover Mirror Lake, an underground water pool that reflects the
magnificent rock formations overhead. You will also visit the Grand
Ballroom which is 60 feet long, 30 feet wide, and some 70 feet high in one
area. It can hold several hundred people and features a natural balcony on
its back wall. Other notable formations include Niagara Falls Frozen Over,
the Capitol Dome, Seneca Indians Counsel Room, Princess Snowbird in Stone,
Fairyland, Fruit Chimney, and many more.
Subterranean rooms, filled
with the splendor of nature's artistry, create an air of enchantment.
Visitors may set free their imaginations as they gaze upon the formations,
such as stalagmites and stalactites, that have been fashioned by drops of
water trickling through the roof of the caverns for thousands of years.
The caverns contain an abundance of snow-white and creamy streaks of
flowstone, where water flowing in a very thin sheet over rocks has
deposited mineral matter. Streaks of flowstone lace themselves with a
tawny color as they drape the walls and fall over precipitous edges. In
several rooms, you will find flecks of calcite crystal woven into the
flowstone causing reflected light to dance and sparkle.
The tours of Seneca Caverns
take 45 to 55 minutes and are guided through well-lit level walkways and
stairs. The cavern temperature is a comfortable 54-degrees all year round,
so bring a light jacket or sweater as well as your camera.
The caverns are situated on
12 spacious acres with oak trees and ample picnic space and a free picnic
shelter. The cavern grounds also feature an Appalachian style family
restaurant and a gift shop featuring many West Virginia handcrafted items.
Also offered is the state’s only gemstone mining and a playground for
children.
The caverns are open year
round. For more information call Seneca Caverns at (304) 567-2691.
