Your Guide To The Mountains of Maryland, Pennsylvania & West Virginia.

All Aboard The
Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

The horn sounds, the wheels start screeching and the train begins its gradual departure from Wappocomo Station outside of Romney, WV. On any given weekend from May to November and almost every day in October, hundreds of people come here to board the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad for a three and a half hour adventure.

Sightseers visit this rural community from near and far to ride the rails that follow the South Branch of the Potomac River. They come for the remarkable scenery but also for a chance to see our national symbol.  A ride on the Potomac Eagle provides one of the best opportunities to see the American Bald Eagle in the eastern United States. Eagle sighting occur on over 90% of all excursions.

The air is thick with anticipation as the journey begins.  The swaying passenger coaches are hauled by  1950s era diesel locomotives adorned in the Potomac Eagle’s signature blue and gold colors. The narrator tells an eager audience about the passing antebellum homes and the century old remnants of railroading that dot the picturesque countryside. A magical transformation is visible as young and old alike gleefully grin out the windows at the awe-inspiring landscape rolling by.

The route leads the train into a six-mile long narrow valley known locally as “The Trough”. Formed by the 2,119 foot high Mill Creek Mountain to the west and the 1,644 foot high Sawmill Ridge to the east, this remote forested canyon is accessible only by railroad or boat. It is here where bald eagle sightings are most common.

The train stops at the entrance to the Trough and the narrator announces that the gondola car at the front of the train is now open. Once used to carry railroad ties, this converted open top freight car allows passengers an unobstructed view of the clear river, the towering forest, the glorious sky and the hoped for eagles.

Soon the train is rolling again and within minutes the narrator elatedly announces that an eagle has been spotted across the river perched high in a tree. Passengers point skyward and cameras click with delight. Expectations are quickly fulfilled and interest is rapidly heightened as everyone eagerly searches the sky, mountains, trees and riverbank for another eagle.

The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad makes for a great family outing combining the fun of riding the rails with history and natural beauty. Don’t forget your camera!

Passengers may bring their own food and drink however no smoking, alcoholic beverages or pets allowed on the train. First-class seating is available with a climate-controlled lounge, dining cars and a complimentary lunch.
