Alpine Lake
Resort:
WV’s Best Kept Secret
Alpine Lake Resort and Conference
Center is a recreational community nestled high in the mountains in West
Virginia. The resort was started in 1969 as “Mountaintop Vacationland” as
a development spearheaded by Terra Alta and Preston County business
leaders. From the 1930’s, the property itself had been a hunting and
fishing club owned by Arlie Hull. At that time, the lake consisted of just
65 acres.
Shortly after the creation of the
“Mountaintop Vacationland” the resort fell upon hard times and was rescued
about 1969 by Morgantown Industrialist J.W. Ruby. It was under his
direction that the development was renamed Alpine Lake, greatly expanded
and the complete plan for a residential community drawn up. In 1980, after
Ruby’s death the resort was turned over the Alpine Lake Property Owners
Association. The organization is now responsible for the operation and
management of the resort.
The present resort now encompasses
2,300 acres of wooded land and several miles of paved roads providing easy
access to nearly all of its 2,300 lots. A beautiful 200-acre lake, fed by
springs and wooded mountain streams, is the community's focal point.
Regularly stocked with a variety of freshwater fish and a sandy beach
perfect for sunbathing and swimming makes the lake an attractive amenity.
Motorized boats are not permitted on the lake, however sailboats and other
forms of “man-powered” boats are. A spacious boathouse is often used for
meetings, recreation, dances, and cookouts.
A handsome lodge overlooks the
southern end of the lake. It houses a restaurant facility capable of
seating 200 people, a bar, numerous conference and meeting rooms, an
indoor heated Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a fitness center. Catering
services for various sized groups are available and the resort welcome
special functions. Guests can stay at the comfortable 35-room motel.
Alpine Lake Resort also boasts an
18-hole golf course. The par 72 offers a unique design of 6 par fives, 6
par fours, and 6 par threes, with the par threes being among the most
challenging you'll play anywhere. Other recreational opportunities include
cross-country skiing, snow sledding and tubing, hiking on 15 miles of
trails, biking, tennis courts, and miniature golf.
Tucked into the natural landscape
are more than 345 residences, built over the years by people who enjoy
nature. Of those homes, 95 serve as full-time residences. Others are
occupied on a seasonal or vacation basis and some are rented to other
visitors by there owners.
Alpine Lake was presented an "Award
for Excellence" by the West Virginia Department of Commerce, which cited
the community for careful ecological planning in preserving the natural
beauty and resources of the area through stringent controls.
Alpine Lake Resort is located in
Preston County, near Terra Alta, WV, just 30 minutes from Deep Creek Lake,
