Your Guide To The Mountains of Maryland, Pennsylvania & West Virginia.

Can You Find Gravity Hill?

Gravity Hill is a place that is surely to be experienced. It is where the laws of physics have gone haywire. Cars roll uphill, water flows the wrong way. Fill up your gas tank and head to Bedford County, PA to experience it for yourself.

How To Get There:
From Route 30, drive to the town of Schellsburg. In Schellsburg, turn North on Route 96 at the one and only traffic light (towards the town of New Paris). Drive about 4 miles. Before you come to New Paris, you’ll come upon a small metal bridge (the road is paved, the sides are metal). Turn left just before this bridge on Bethel Hollow Road / S.R. 4016. Drive for 6/10 of a mile and bear left at the "Y" in the road. Stay on the "main" road. After another 1.5 miles you come to an intersection that has a stop sign for oncoming traffic only. Bear right on this road and travel another 2/10 of a mile, looking for the letters "GH" spray painted on the road. Go past the first "GH" about 1/10 a mile and stop before you come to the next "GH". You have arrived!

What To Do When You Get There:
Stay calm...keep cool. As you strain your ears to hear the laws of physics being shattered, check your rear-view mirror for any oncoming traffic, put your car in neutral and take your foot off the break. Your car will roll backwards, uphill. Some folks like to test the site with a tennis ball or maybe a jug of water, poured out, only to flow mysteriously up the hill.

You’ll Also Want To Know:
There is a second, unmarked Gravity Hill 3/10 of a mile past the second painted "GH". Look on your right for a telephone pole with the number "69". Stop beside this pole and defy gravity once again! There is a small turn-around area on the left hand side of the road, just beyond the second Gravity Hill.

A few speculate it is an optical illusion. Why it happens, no one knows for sure. But whatever the reason, you can tell your friends that you’ve actually made it to the often talked about, but seldom found, Gravity Hill.
